Harry Truman was one of the 20th century's greatest presidents. He was a champion of the middle class and a plainspoken man who told the truth. And one of his best lines was, "I wonder how many times do you have to be hit on the head before you figure out who's hitting you? It's about time the people of America realize what the Republicans have been doing to them." It was true in Truman's time, and it's even truer today.
The Republicans have passed billions in tax cuts for the rich, given more billions in subsidies to large corporations, and outsourced our country's public policy to business lobbyists. They've cut heating oil assistance and reduced the number of kids getting health insurance. Under Republican leadership, the middle class is poorer now than it was eight years ago. Our government looks the other way as we face higher heating costs, more foreclosures, rising unemployment, and inflation in everything from food to gas. But they pour more billions into failing investment banks to protect their shareholders.
We need to stop them hitting us before they knock us senseless. A great way to do this is to re-elect Carol Shea-Porter to Congress. She said she would represent the other 99 percent of us and she kept her promise. She fought to triple heating oil assistance and pushed for cheaper drugs for seniors. She worked to lower health insurance costs for working families, and for a fair break for troops returning from Iraq. We need to support her Nov. 4 so she can go back to Washington and stop them from hitting us over the head.
